Private equity and portfolio leaders

An independent view of the technology, and a path to fix it.

You are evaluating an acquisition, holding a business with inherited systems, or preparing one for growth or exit, and management says the technology is fine. We give you an independent, read-only view of where the risk sits, what fixing it would cost and whether the team can carry the plan.

Answers from our published service information

01 / When investors call us

When the technology has to be understood quickly.

The constraints are usually the same: limited time, management reporting that may be optimistic, other advisers already involved, and a business that cannot be disrupted while it is assessed.

  • An acquisition is being evaluated and the technology needs an independent look.
  • A portfolio company has inherited ageing systems.
  • Security or compliance concerns have surfaced.
  • The business is preparing for rapid growth or exit.
  • Technology has become a constraint on the investment thesis.

02 / The assessment

Technology assessment for an investment or portfolio business.

Built on the scope of our Modernisation Assessment, and written for an investment decision rather than an engineering backlog.

What we look at
Dependency mapping, patch status, test and regression coverage, recovery readiness and the architecture the business runs on, with a target architecture where change is needed.
What it means for the business
Risk-ranked priorities, each with what it means for cost, timing and the plan, and cost and timeline ranges for addressing it.
What is uncertain
Where the evidence available in the time allowed is incomplete, the report says so and what it would take to close the gap.
What happens next
A recommended sequence, including a clear 'wait' option where that is the right call.
How independence is handled
The assessment is a standalone deliverable. It is read-only: we change nothing while we assess. Any later implementation is scoped and priced separately, and the report stands on its own whoever does the work.
How it is bought
Timeboxed and quoted before you commit. Scope and timing are confirmed before it begins.

03 / How an engagement works

Assess first. Decide. Then fix, if you want us to.

Each step is scoped and priced on its own, so you commit to one at a time.

  1. 01

Technology assessment for an investment or portfolio business

An independent, read-only view of technology risk, cost and capability, for an acquisition, a holding or exit preparation.

  2. 02

    Post-acquisition modernisation

Modernising the systems a business runs in stages, while it keeps trading, in the order the assessment recommends.

  3. 03

Automation and governance for operating improvement

AI connected to real processes, with authority, approvals and a record of every action, so the improvement can be defended.

04 / What we hear most

Six reasonable doubts about an assessment.

  • There is very little time.

The assessment is timeboxed, and its scope and timing are agreed and quoted before it starts. If the time available limits what can be checked, the report says what was not covered.

  • Management says the technology is fine.

We form our own view from the evidence, read-only: the code, the infrastructure, patch status and test coverage. Where our findings differ from management's view, we show the evidence.

  • What technical debt is hiding in there?

Dependency mapping, patch status and test coverage are where it tends to show. We rank what we find by risk and by the cost of addressing it, so it can be weighed against the plan.

  • An assessment is one more cost.

It is quoted before you commit and scoped to the decision in front of you. Its job is to turn an unknown cost into a range you can plan around.

  • Can the team carry the plan?

We look at where knowledge of the systems sits, whether it depends on one or two people, and what the recommended plan would ask of the team. Gaps are described as facts about the plan, not judgements of individuals.

  • Advisers find problems and then leave.

The engineers who assess the systems are available to fix them, scoped and priced separately once you have the report. You are under no obligation to use us for that work.

05 / Evidence

Remediation we have delivered.

These are not investment assessments. They are completed modernisation engagements, shown as evidence of the delivery work that can follow an assessment.

Common questions

What investors ask us.

Is this technology due diligence?

It is a technology assessment for an investment or portfolio business. It can inform due diligence, an acquisition decision or exit preparation. It is not a legal, financial or audit opinion, and we do not offer it as a packaged due diligence service.

Will the assessment disrupt the business?

It is read-only. We need access to code, infrastructure and documentation, and time with the people who run the systems, agreed in advance.

Can you work alongside advisers already involved?

Yes. The assessment is a standalone deliverable, so it can sit beside other advisers' work. We agree at the start who we report to and how findings are shared.

How long does it take, and what does it cost?

That depends on the size of the estate and what the decision needs. Scope, timing and fee are confirmed and quoted before you commit.

What happens after the report?

You decide. If you want the findings addressed, we scope and price the remediation separately. If another team does the work, the report gives them a ranked plan to start from.
